The United States Senate is set to vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) on Monday, February 28, 2022. WHPA protects the right to access abortion for people. It prevents medically unnecessary abortion restrictions and bans on abortion. It would create a statutory right for health care providers to administer medication abortion or provide abortion care, as well as a right for patients to receive that care.

Back in September, the WHPA passed in the House. This was a historic instance because it represented the first congressional vote on standalone legislation that would protect abortion rights.

According to US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, on Monday, February 28, the Senate will hold the first-ever vote on WHPA. This vote comes on the eve of March 1st, marking six months since Texans lost the right to have abortions past six weeks. Since 2011, anti-abortion lawmakers have passed more than 500 laws restricting and banning abortion. In January 2022 alone, lawmakers have introduced over 50 unconstitutional abortion bans in state legislatures, including at least 10 S.B. 8 copycat bans on abortion.

This vote is a step in the right direction towards making abortion access a reality for all. Reach out to your senators and tell them to vote yes on WHPA and protect abortion rights for all.
